The United States is growing into one of the world’s best producers of footballing talents and USMNT’s young stars showed their potential during the opening round of the Under-20 World Cup in Argentina.

They made a fantastic group stage winning the three games (Ecuador, Slovakia, Fiji) without conceding a single goal and outplaying all rivals. They are in the second group of title contenders, after Brazil and Argentina.

Among the many players who have stood out for the 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship winners are attackers Cade Cowell and Diego Luna.

Cowell scored a goal in the 3-0 win versus Fiji and then again in the group stage finale against Slovakia, which was a 2-0 final. Meanwhile, Luna has tormented opposing defenses with his playmaking and has a goal and an assist in the tournament.

The U.S. have reached the quarterfinal round of the last three U20 World Cups and that streak will be on the line against a New Zealand side that finished third in Group A.

On the other hand, New Zealand is one of the worst teams in the tournament. They managed to qualify to ⅛ finals as the second best third qualified, ending above Guatemala in their group and below Argentina and Uzbekistan. Struggled a lot to beat Guatemala (1:0) with a late goal at 81’, while against Uzbekistan (2:2) they were totally outplayed.

Then in the last round against Argentina (which is similar to the USA) they were totally destroyed, losing 0:5 with 24% possession, 0 shots (either on target) and 0 corners.

The U.S. and New Zealand are no strangers when it comes to Round of 16 match-ups in the U20 World Cup. In the 2017 edition the two sides squared off in the first stage of the knockout round, in which the U.S. claimed a 6-0 victory.

Seeing the poor performance of New Zealand against Argentina and the good form of The Yanks, is expected to see here a comfortable win and also a clean sheet for the USA.
