The most interesting team in the first round of the Europa League knockout stage is Nottingham.

This season, having already used a record four head coaches, Nottingham has become a complete circus club under the ownership of Evangelos Marinakis. One managerial sacking has followed another, with no discernible tactical logic or continuity behind the changes.

Defensively minded Nuno Espírito Santo was dismissed in September, followed by the opposite style with Ange Postecoglou, in October, the uncrowned king of nihilistic football, Sean Dyche, in February, and now the man in charge is former Wolves coach Vítor Pereira, who builds his tactics around possession.

Players cannot develop any tactical backbone amid such constant managerial and stylistic upheaval. In the Premier League, Nottingham are on a four-match winless run and are in obvious danger of being relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

In the Europa League, however, the team played a remarkable match away at Fenerbahçe last week. The 3–0 victory over a Fenerbahçe side that is unbeaten in the Turkish league was fully deserved, with Nottingham dominating the shot count 23–6 and the expected goals 2.7–0.5. Overall, both the result and the statistics were astonishing, as Nottingham had entered the match as underdogs according to the betting markets.

A three-goal advantage going into the home leg appears safe on paper, even though there are plenty of question marks surrounding Nottingham. Coach Pereira may rotate some key players today. Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, is dealing with squad issues due to both injuries and suspensions.

Given the Turkish side’s need to chase a large deficit, the game is likely to be very open, and I expect Fenerbahce to score a few, which probably is not enough to qualify.
