European night double shot! ⚽️

ARSENAL - ATLETICO MADRID

This is one of those Champions League nights where the stakes, the names and the narratives all align—and honestly, I think it’s going to be Arsenal who come out on top.

There’s a lot to like about this Arsenal side. For all the talk around their attacking patterns or the arrival of big-money players like Yokeres, what has actually been most impressive is the structure, the discipline and how little they concede.

They’ve kept clean sheets in both group games so far and haven’t conceded a single goal at home in a Champions League group-stage match since 2021. That’s eight in a row now. You don’t maintain that kind of record by accident—it’s the product of a system that’s built to suffocate, a back line that trusts each other implicitly and a manager who has gradually morphed from a Guardiola disciple into something far more pragmatic and complete.

Declan Rice and Zubimendi (should both start) offer the kind of midfield control that, quite frankly, Atleti will find difficult to disrupt. And in front of them, even with Odegaard out, there’s enough variation to keep a defensive unit guessing. Martinelli seems to be growing into the European rhythm, Trossard is always available to sneak in between the lines, and Saka—if fully fit—is still the most consistently impactful wide player in the Premier League. He’s got that rare mix of production and responsibility; he’s a game-changer and a team player, and in matches like this, those are priceless.

Now, Atletico. I have a lot of time for how they’ve evolved. This isn’t the same Simeone side from five years ago. They play higher, they look more fluid with the ball, and they’ve got individual quality that can punish anyone in moments—Alvarez, Griezmann, Barrios... all capable.

But for all their strides forward, they're still unreliable away from home. No wins in five on the road this season, and more concerning than the numbers is how vulnerable they look when pressed and forced into their own third. They can break, yes, but when they don’t have early success in transitions, they struggle to find rhythm.

And this Arsenal side doesn’t give you many of those chances. They keep the ball well, but more importantly, they control where the game is played. Saliba and Gabriel have been immense in managing transitions. Timber and Calafiori provide extra layers of protection when they invert.

And when it comes to set pieces, Arsenal might be one of the most dangerous sides in Europe. Nicolas Jover, the set-piece coach, has made them ruthless in both boxes—and that matters, especially against an Atleti side that still relies heavily on dead-ball situations.

Simeone will want to keep things tight and test Arsenal’s patience, but that’s where this version of the Gunners has matured. They’re happy to wear opponents down, knowing the quality they have in the final third will eventually create the moment. And in truth, if Atletico have another shaky start like they did at Anfield, this might be over before they’ve had a chance to settle.

I don’t expect Arsenal to run riot—they rarely do in games like this. But I do think they’ll have enough to control the match, limit Atleti to moments, and take one or two of their own. The quality is there, the balance is there, and the numbers—especially at the Emirates—are hard to ignore.

Arsenal should win this. Not comfortably, but deservedly.

UNION SG - INTER MILAN

It’s no coincidence that Inter are starting to find their rhythm right now. With Chivu at the helm and a squad that's slowly clicking into gear, the Nerazzurri head to Brussels with one clear objective: take all three points and all but wrap up their progression to the next phase.

Union Saint-Gilloise are no pushovers in their own context, but for what Inter represent at this point in the season, this is a game they simply need to win.

Union SG are one of those great football stories from last season, and they’re still a brave, energetic side with a few exciting players. But the 4-0 hammering they suffered at home against Newcastle exposed the gulf in quality when they’re forced to sit deep for long spells.

Even with the managerial change, and a good domestic result at the weekend under David Hubert, the reality is that against high-level European opposition, they lack the structure and defensive cohesion to hold out for 90 minutes. And that’s where Inter come in — calm, methodical, and with a level of tactical maturity that’s hard to match.

Thuram is out, yes, and that removes some of the threat in open space. But the fundamentals remain. Lautaro is in full leadership mode, Bonny is seizing his moment, and the midfield trio of Calhanoglu, Barella and Frattesi looks sharp. Inter don’t just beat teams — they manage games with intelligence.

We saw it against Ajax, then against Slavia, and again away at Roma this weekend: they don’t need to dominate for 90 minutes to take control. They know how to kill momentum, when to push, when to drop, and most importantly, how to protect a lead.

Lotto Park will be loud and it might get a bit frantic in the early stages, but Inter have the personality and the experience to handle that. With Sommer in goal and a back three likely formed by De Vrij, Bastoni and Acerbi, they’ve got the tools to deal with aerial threats and direct play. Union SG will look for Ait El Hadj to find pockets of space, or for a moment of chaos on a set piece, but over the course of the match, Inter’s organisation should wear them down.

One thing that stands out about this Inter side — and it's why I’m backing them again — is how efficient they’ve become. When they go ahead, they rarely lose control. They manage their leads well, and in the Champions League especially, they’ve become almost mechanical in how they close games out. They don’t need to score four or five to show dominance. A professional 2-0 or 2-1 job is often more than enough.

I expect that kind of performance again here. Nothing flashy, just clinical football. Control, patience, and execution. If they stick to their plan, this should be another win — and one step closer to the knockout rounds.
