ALAVES - VALENCIA

This match has the feel of one of those tense, cautious battles where neither side quite trusts itself enough to take control, and where the points might be decided more by necessity than by quality. Alavés are in a decent place after their win against Elche, but I don’t think it was as comfortable as the 3-1 scoreline suggests. They’re a well-organised side, hard to beat, but also very limited in attack. That’s the core problem with them this season: they don’t have goals in them, and they don’t create a lot either.

They grind, they compete, and they keep games tight. Only one of their matches this season has seen more than three goals, they have scored more than one two times, and most have been low-scoring affairs decided by a moment or two. That reflects both their strengths and their weaknesses. They don’t concede much, but they also struggle to put games to bed or generate consistent pressure. They’ll win few, lose few, and draw many.

Valencia, on the other hand, arrive in a rough patch after back-to-back defeats, but the performances haven’t been as poor as the results suggest. Against Girona and Oviedo, they lost matches where they were well in it, even dominant in phases. Against Oviedo, they missed a penalty at 1-0. Against Girona, the game was balanced and could have gone either way. I don’t see this Valencia side as being in freefall at all. They’re competing, and there’s more quality in the squad than the table might suggest.

The likes of Danjuma and Hugo Duro give them some punch in attack, and even if no one is currently at their best, there’s enough in that team to expect a reaction. The urgency is certainly there: Mallorca's win has tightened things up at the bottom, and Valencia can’t afford a third straight defeat. They need to show up.

What tilts this for me is that Valencia tend to rise when pushed into a corner. This isn't a side that will lie down easily. And while Alavés are strong at home and hard to break, I don't see them taking control of this one. The last few meetings between these two have been very close, with Valencia often just edging it or holding their own in tough spots. This could be another one of those nights.

I see a lot of balance here, but the need is greater on the visitors' side. They’ve had tough away games this season, but this is one they should be targeting. I wouldn’t be surprised at a draw, but I see more reasons to trust Valencia to compete properly here than to believe in Alavés repeating another home win. Even in a tricky context, they have slightly more punch and more players capable of deciding tight games.

IFK GOTEBORG - MJALLBY

All eyes will be on Gamla Ullevi this Monday as the league title hangs in the balance. Hammarby’s win in the Stockholm derby means that Mjällby must now win in Gothenburg to secure the Allsvenskan crown. They have lost just one league game, those AIK's defeat in May, and their entire campaign has been a masterclass in collective discipline, tactical maturity, and unwavering belief in the plan set by Anders Torstensson. With 16 straight matches unbeaten, this group arrives at Gamla Ullevi with the best defensive structure in the league and a calmness that belies the occasion.

Their opponent, IFK Göteborg, are still chasing a European place but arrive with more questions than answers. Off the pitch, the club remains divided – from supporter unrest to leadership turmoil, it's been anything but stable. On the pitch, Göteborg have improved defensively, but the attack continues to lack inspiration and edge.

Blåvitt’s loss to Hammarby exposed familiar flaws: a team too reliant on wide play, too predictable in the final third, and lacking genuine threat unless Tobias Heintz turns up in top form. With their best attackers out of rhythm and their build-up predictable, this isn’t the kind of side you back to break down Mjällby’s block.

Mjällby won’t go chasing this game, even with the title on the line. That’s not their identity. They will stay compact, absorb pressure, and wait for the right moment. And with Göteborg needing to take more risks as time ticks on, the spaces will open eventually.
