Sometimes football gives you fixtures that are more about duty than spectacle. This one at San Mamés feels exactly that for Athletic. If you want a narrative of stability and pride, you couldn’t script it better.

This isn’t to pretend it will be flawless. Without Nico, Valverde must shuffle his front four, deciding whether to lean on Berenguer or Navarro wide, and whether Guruzeta or Maroán starts as the reference. It’s a jigsaw still finding its fit, and Athletic’s recent drought proves they can dominate without killing games off.

But against a Girona defence patched together with veterans like Blind and improvised wing-backs, there will be chances. What matters is taking the first one — because if San Mamés senses weakness and the scoreboard moves, the whole dynamic shifts in favour of the home side.

Girona, for their part, can still pose flickers of danger. Brian Hill or Asprilla might conjure a moment, Banat will run the channels, and set-pieces with Blind around are not irrelevant. Yet you can’t escape the sense they’re coming here to survive rather than compete. With energy low, confidence shot, and numbers thin, this looks less like a tactical duel and more like a test of how long they can hold out before Athletic’s pressure tells.

San Mamés has a way of lifting its team when crisis threatens, and the locals know this is the fixture to restart the season. The head-to-head is lopsided in Athletic’s favour, the visitors are patched up and fractious, and the home side, even in a stuttering patch, still carries too much collective quality to let this slip. It might not be elegant, but all the signs point towards Bilbao finally shaking off their drought and taking the win they badly need.

AC MILAN - LECCE

San Siro under the lights, Coppa Italia knockout football, and a Milan side that has finally found rhythm after a shaky start. Everything about this tie against Lecce points towards an opportunity for the Rossoneri to assert themselves and win with authority, something Allegri himself has stressed in recent days. This is not a competition Milan have lifted since 2003, and with the weight of history behind them, the desire to go deep is strong. Against an opponent in poor form and with half a team missing, this looks like the perfect night to put on a statement display.

Milan’s recovery after the Cremonese defeat has been impressive. They beat Lecce 2–0 in the league not long ago, followed it up with a gritty 1–0 against Bologna, and then dismantled Udinese 3–0 in a performance that had echoes of Allegri’s more dominant sides. Pulisic is thriving in his freer role behind the striker, with goals and assists arriving at the perfect time to cover for Rafael Leão’s absence. Lecce, by contrast, arrive at San Siro in survival mode. Di Francesco has not been able to inspire the spark the club hoped for when he returned, and they are bottom in Serie A after defeats to Milan, Atalanta and Cagliari, scoring just twice in four league games. Their forward line is decimated: Banda suspended, Sottil injured, Marchwiński and Jean long-term absentees. Stulic continues to lead the line despite failing to score so far, while Pierotti and Teté Morente are left to improvise on the wings.
