REAL SOCIEDAD - REAL MADRID

There is something almost poetic about this fixture coming straight after the international break. Anoeta, a stadium with atmosphere and history, will host Real Sociedad against a Real Madrid side that right now looks sharper and more settled than at this stage in recent seasons. I have seen too many of these post-international break games to know that rhythm and structure matter more than ever, and in that sense Madrid arrive with an advantage.

The contrast between the two sides could hardly be clearer. Xabi Alonso has instilled order and automatisms with impressive speed. His Madrid defend as a block, press with coherence, and above all look mature beyond their months under his guidance. Even without Bellingham or Camavinga, the midfield is stacked with quality and variety. Tchouaméni has grown into the anchor, Valverde provides energy and verticality, while Arda Güler is beginning to look like he belongs in this level. Add the star power of Mbappé and Vinícius in transition and you understand why Madrid have started with maximum points and the feeling of authority.

On the other side, Real Sociedad are still searching for themselves. Sergio Francisco has not managed to give the team a clear tactical identity, and the summer market was underwhelming. They remain without a genuine number nine. Oyarzabal is doing a job through the middle, but he is not a killer, not a striker who threatens with pace or instinct inside the box. Oskarsson, the only true alternative, is injured and unavailable. Yangel Herrera, arguably their best signing, is also out. Carlos Soler has arrived, yes, but we haven’t seen the Valencia version of him in years. Too often he looks peripheral.

That leaves the weight on familiar names: Barrenetxea, who is talented but still inconsistent, and Kubo, who needs to be sharper in decision-making. The Japanese winger often slows attacks down instead of exploiting space, and against Madrid’s aggressive press that is fatal. Sociedad will try to play out with Alex Remiro’s distribution, looking for those diagonal passes into the half spaces, but if Madrid lock the press properly it could easily turn into turnovers in dangerous areas. And if there is one team you don’t want running at you after a loss of possession, it is Madrid with Mbappé and Vinícius.

Defensively, Real Sociedad continue to give away too much - their back line doesn’t convince me. Against Oviedo, they were simply awful, conceding goals far too easily. The truth is that Sociedad have not led once in La Liga this season, and every match has seen them chasing from behind. That is not a recipe for upsetting Madrid.

For me, the tactical key lies in the midfield. If Madrid’s press forces Sociedad to go long, Oyarzabal will struggle to hold play up against Huijsen and company. If Sociedad try to play short, they will need perfection, because Tchouaméni and Valverde thrive on pouncing when the ball circulation slows. From there, Madrid will transition with devastating pace. The other element is Anoeta itself: the crowd always makes this a difficult away trip, but when the team comes in wounded, the nervousness spreads quickly if Madrid start well.

I expect Madrid to control the game’s rhythm. Even if Sociedad manage to resist for a while, it is hard to imagine them keeping Mbappé and Vinícius quiet over ninety minutes, especially with the defensive fragility shown so far. Madrid’s maturity, their ability to manage phases of pressure and then explode into space, should prove too much. This feels like one of those afternoons where the difference in squad depth, clarity of ideas, and individual quality is decisive.

ATHLETIC - ALAVES

This Basque derby at San Mamés feels particularly tilted towards Athletic. They arrive from the international break with three wins from three, matching Real Madrid at the top, and with the opportunity to write a small page of history by opening La Liga with four consecutive victories for the first time ever. Momentum, confidence, and structure are all on their side, and the atmosphere in Bilbao will surely reflect that.

Athletic’s strength under Valverde right now is their balance. Defensively, they have been extremely reliable, conceding little and managing games with maturity. Unai Simón continues to provide security, while the pairing of Paredes and Vivian has become more consistent with each passing match. The absence of Nico Williams will hurt in terms of explosiveness on the left, but Berenguer is more than capable of offering a disciplined alternative. More importantly, players like Oihan Sancet are reaching the point where they make the difference in these tight encounters. His intelligence between the lines, combined with Iñaki Williams’ ability to stretch defences, ensures Athletic always have ways of opening matches that start locked.

What impresses me most is their patience. This side no longer needs to overwhelm from the first whistle. They know how to wait, to absorb phases of play, and then strike decisively. It is the mark of a mature team. Even when performances are not sparkling, they have the steel to grind out wins, something that has historically separated good Athletic sides from great ones. With the Arsenal match looming in the Champions League, there will inevitably be rotation, but the squad looks deep enough in key areas to handle both fronts. Guruzeta and Maroán offer different solutions up front, and both can play their role depending on the rhythm of the game.

Deportivo Alavés, by contrast, arrive in Bilbao with far less certainty. Their squad looks weaker than last season. They lost their top scorer and have not replaced him with a guaranteed source of goals. Lucas Boyé has quality but comes in lacking rhythm after injury, and Toni Martínez, while hard-working, is not a proven finisher at this level. In midfield, Denis Suárez and Antonio Blanco provide technical ability, but Denis is no longer the player he was at Celta or Villarreal, and there is a sense that he was picked up simply because he was available. The same goes for Mariano, another signing who is a shadow of the forward he once promised to be.

Defensively, the doubts are even greater. Many of those starting now were squad players last season, and the line often looks patched together. Against sides with pace and verticality, they have suffered badly. Away from Mendizorrotza, the drop in performance is significant, and San Mamés has historically been a nightmare for them: one win in league history, back in 2005. They are organised, yes, and can frustrate opponents in games with few goals, but against Betis in Seville they were dominated from start to finish, and this match has many of the same ingredients.

For Athletic, the key will be patience again. Alavés will try to sit deep, close spaces, and make it a battle of attrition. But Athletic’s current blend of defensive solidity and attacking variety means they can break them down eventually. Sancet’s presence between the lines, combined with Iñaki’s direct threat and Berenguer’s work on the left, should stretch Alavés’ fragile back four. Set pieces could also be decisive, with Paredes and Vivian both strong in the air.

I expect a tight scoreboard for much of the night, because Alavés specialise in keeping games close, but Athletic’s maturity, momentum, and superior quality should see them through. It might not be a thrashing, but it feels like the kind of derby where San Mamés will once again see its team find a way to win.
