After Wednesday’s English League Cup clash between Grimsby and Manchester United—and all the fallout—Saturday’s most intriguing football match has to be Manchester United versus Burnley.

Manchester United, a club plagued by problems in recent years, suffered a shocking collapse on Wednesday in the League Cup against Grimsby, a fourth-tier (League Two) team. Their poor performance (eliminated on penalties) was one thing, but an even bigger story was how head coach Rúben Amorim behaved and the statements he made after the game.

Amorim’s post-match comments were so bleak and laconic that you couldn’t help but wonder if he’d even coach another United game. He seemed completely disillusioned, frustrated that the players weren’t performing for the badge.

The other possibility is that Amorim was trying, with his apocalyptic words, to shake up and motivate his squad for the upcoming matches. If that was the intention, though, this tactic can only work once. Saturday will reveal whether Amorim is capable of steering United forward.

For years, Manchester United has been massively overrated compared to the quality of its squad. Even now, £225 million has been spent on Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha combined—but none of them are anywhere near world-class. To be blunt, they are solid players from top Premier League teams who happened to excel in lower divisions last season.

Good coaching, along with team commitment and spirit, can lift even weaker squads to the top. Right now, United doesn’t seem to have that spirit—unless Wednesday’s events have sparked a change within the team.

Promoted Burnley is certainly not on United’s level in terms of squad quality, and United should still be the favorite. But they’re far from the overwhelming favorite they would be under ideal circumstances. Surprisingly, the betting markets haven’t reacted much to Wednesday’s shock. A bet on Burnley +0.5 at odds of more than 3.2 definitely is worth a look. On the other hand, if Amorim’s gamble pays off, we could see the most charged-up United side in years.

All in all, it will be interesting to see what Amorim can come up with!
