Arsenal’s season opener away to Manchester United was far from impressive, even though the team came away with a 1–0 victory. United led the shot count 22–9, and the expected goals were 1.5–1.3 in their favour. Arsenal’s much-debated new signing, striker Viktor Gyökeres, was almost completely invisible. The Swedish forward, substituted after an hour, failed to register a single shot (with an expected goals tally of exactly 0) and managed just three touches inside the opponent’s box.

Now, back at home against Leeds, results are expected. Even if Arsenal’s opener wasn’t particularly eye-catching, at the Emirates, the team should have an excellent chance of beating the handicap.

The results from Burnley’s and Sunderland’s opening games give a misleading impression of the teams’ strengths. Burnley lost 0–3 away to Tottenham. In terms of play, Burnley were not completely overwhelmed, but they simply couldn’t cope with the better side. Sunderland’s 3–0 home win over West Ham, meanwhile, comes with a lot of sugar coating. The goals came cheaply, as the expected goals were almost even at 0.7–0.6. Overall, West Ham were far weaker than anticipated, and much of the result can be attributed more to the Londoners’ shortcomings than to Sunderland’s strengths. Also, West Ham showed their lack of class last night vs Chelsea.

Personally, I see Burnley as at least a slight favourite here. The match has a strong low-scoring profile, so a draw is a good option alongside a home win for cover. Or is it simply a draw? Already a big game between relegation candidates, a match neither wants to lose, a match where both teams are offensively low on ideas.
