Without Weiser and Stage, the double pivot of Lynen and Bittencourt is light on ball-winning, which matters when Chaïbi pops between their lines. Out wide, Deman’s long absence forces adjustments at left-back, and that corridor will be stress-tested by Doan’s dribble-and-wall-pass patterns with Kristensen. Up front, the transition from Ducksch’s playmaking to a new focal point is still unresolved, so Bremen’s first pressure release is likely to be Njinmah’s runs into space rather than structured combinations.

The goalkeeping subplots add spice. Zetterer, if he does start, knows Bremen’s habits and is aggressive off his line; that suits Toppmöller’s willingness to hold a higher rest defence. On the other side, Backhaus is talented but green, and Werder’s build-up asks him to play—Eintracht will set traps on Friedl and Stark, invite the pass wide, then jump the lane. If Werder break the first wave, they can threaten: Schmid between lines is clever, and Grüll’s left foot can punish from the far side. But they’ll need cleaner exits than we’ve seen in pre-season, and the distances in Steffen’s 4-2-3-1 must compress quickly in defensive transition; otherwise Burkardt and Uzun will run at a retreating back four far too often.

Set pieces tilt towards the hosts as well. Koch attacks the near-zone with purpose, Theate occupies the back stack, and without Weiser’s delivery Werder’s own dead-ball threat is reduced. If Bremen are forced into longer spells without the ball, their disciplinary record from last season is another red flag—cheap fouls around the box are exactly what Frankfurt feed on.

All told, the matchup feels skewed by timing and depth. Frankfurt’s mechanisms are already in place, they’re typically strong at home, and there’s a clear path to overload Werder’s weakened left side while pinning the visitors in with counter-pressing. Bremen’s new ideas will bear fruit later in the autumn; on opening weekend, they look a touch undercooked for this specific away assignment in a febrile stadium.

BAYER LEVERKUSEN - HOFFENHEIM

Bayer Leverkusen open their Bundesliga campaign in front of their home crowd with the sense of starting over again, a new chapter led by Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman has inherited a squad stripped of some of its most influential figures, with Wirtz, Frimpong, Xhaka and Tah all moving on, but the early signs suggest he is already shaping a competitive side. Christian Ilzer has insisted that his team will go to Leverkusen full of confidence, determined to be awkward opponents. His side looks younger, hungrier, and perhaps less burdened than the one that stumbled to 15th last season. The return of Asslani and Damar from their loan spells at Elversberg has been a boost, as both have slotted into the side seamlessly, while the midfield pairing of Burger and Avdullahu has quickly shown promise.

The question for Hoffenheim is whether their pre-season intensity translates into the Bundesliga. Playing Leverkusen away is a very different test than facing Darmstadt or Metz in friendlies, and Ilzer knows that Baumann and his back line will be far more exposed. Hoffenheim are in good spirits, yet this is a different level of opponent compared to their pre-season run, and Ten Hag will want his new era to begin with authority.
