We saw yesterday what the good nordic teams can do vs weaker opponents when my favourite club Bodo/Glimt thrashed their Austrian opponent by 5-0. Midtjylland are more or less same class with the Norwegians, but KuPS can only dream of Austrian top class! So there is room for a disaster here!

FC Midtjylland is among the top clubs in the Danish Superliga, known for its physical style of play and as a pioneer in set-piece strategies. The sample of the first five rounds of the season is still small, but the trend has been mixed: the attack has produced 2.10 xG per game, while their own defense has conceded 1.89 xG – more than last season.

In European competition, Midtjylland has progressed convincingly in the qualifiers, first narrowly defeating Scottish Premiership third-tier side Hibernian 3–2, and then thrashing Norwegian Cup winners Fredrikstad 5–1. On paper, these opponents were stronger than KuPS, but particularly against Hibernian, the tie was more evenly matched than expected.

KuPS secured at least a spot in the Conference League group stage by defeating Latvian side RFS 3–1 on aggregate. Kuopio’s performance in the second leg was tactically mature, and club legend Petteri Pennanen’s winning goal delighted the home fans. KuPS also claimed vital Veikkausliiga points from FC Inter, overturning a deficit to earn a deserved 2–1 home victory thanks to a man advantage. New signings like Pa Konate immediately filled their roles against FC Inter, but with Thursday’s European qualifier in mind, the biggest question mark remains the match fitness of goalkeeper Johannes Kreidl, about which little information has emerged so far.

Money-wise, the hosts have a squad 20 times worth of the Finns, and especially if Kreidl is out, this looks like an easy task, as the reserve keeper Hakala is shaky and unreliable.
