RFS has quickly risen to become the biggest club in Latvia. In addition to domestic success, it is already aiming for its fourth consecutive spot in the group stage of European competitions, with last season culminating in a Europa League appearance. This season, RFS lost to Malmö in the second qualifying round of the Champions League with an aggregate score of 1–5. RFS and KuPS’s former star player Janis Ikaunieks is suspended for the first leg against KuPS due to a red card received in the previous qualifying round. He also played several years for KuPS!

KuPS’s hopes of advancing to the group stage of European competitions suffered a heavy blow when a two-goal lead against Kazakh side Kairat Almaty was not enough to secure progression after a 0-3 defeat in the second leg. The illness of first-choice goalkeeper Johannes Kreidl ahead of the decisive match was a tough setback. Still, Kuopio’s performances both in Kazakhstan and in the first qualifying round against Milsami have been far from convincing. The hosts’ recent losses on the European stage have enabled them to build a team with a calculated market value twice of KuPS’s. While this does not directly translate to the size of the quality gap between the teams, the Latvians should be considered the pre-match favorites for the tie. The suspended Ikaunieks is an irreplaceable part of RFS’s attacking play, so KuPS’s task in the challenging away match is somewhat eased.

RFS is the better team, but as their league in general is worse than of KuPS they are not that prepared to big games either.
