In both matches, Luis Enrique’s men were the better side in terms of expected goals.

Team news - PSG:

The Bayern match brought bad news in the form of red cards for fullback Lucas Hernandez and center-back Willian Pacho. While Hernandez isn’t part of the ideal starting XI, Pacho’s absence next to Marquinhos is a slight setback.

Real Madrid is in the process of implementing a more proactive playing style under new manager Xabi Alonso. The forwards are now required to show a greater work rate in pressing. One player who has seized his opportunity is 21-year-old Gonzalo Garcia, who has made the most of his chance up front. He has recorded 4 goals and 1 assist in five games, so even though Kylian Mbappé is available again after a stomach bug, Garcia might still retain his starting spot.

Team news - Real Madrid:

Summer signing Dean Huijsen, who has started every match as a center-back, is missing. Alaba and Mendy also out?

While Real is still laying the foundation under Xabi Alonso, PSG can field a well-oiled machine. Despite Pacho’s suspension, PSG enters the semifinal as the favorite. The match is expected to be entertaining, as PSG certainly won’t sit back but will press high as usual. Real will likely try to break the press with short passes, but with the always-dangerous Vini Jr. and a recovered Mbappé up front, long balls behind PSG’s defensive line also present a good opportunity to create chances.

PSG has been highly impressive throughout the tournament. The team has scored 12 goals in five matches, maintained an average possession of 66%, and conceded just one goal. Their attacking play has been particularly effective down the left flank, and their expected goals (xG) numbers have risen to nearly three per match. Although they are missing some players in central defense, their aggressive playing style and strong control of midfield width have kept opponents in check.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, has been tactically more cautious, and there are worrying signs of cracks appearing, especially in defense. The absences of Alaba, Huijsen, and Mendy limit their options. While the attack can create chances even from very little, PSG’s structure has so far remained solid even in transition situations. Real is certainly dangerous, especially if the game opens up, but at this point, PSG appears collectively stronger.

The Real Madrid of Xabi Alonso will be interesting see in La Liga, but they are not yet where they will be. One note regarding La Liga: Real has managed to reschedule their opening round game until October, so there will be some summer holidays after all.
