And without Nicolo Savona, who’s out injured, they’re likely to be even shakier at the back.

Madrid’s quality is just deeper and more balanced. Even without being at full strength, they’ve looked in control across the pitch. Alonso’s style is clicking at the right time, the midfield is bossing games, and Vinícius looks ready to take over matches when needed. Juventus will need to play the perfect game to have a real chance here—but given what we saw against City, that feels a stretch.

Could it be close for a while? Sure. But across 90 minutes, Madrid’s pedigree and firepower should make the difference.

Borussia Dortmund come into this one looking every bit the favourites, and rightly so. Ten games unbeaten across all competitions, a system that’s slowly starting to settle under Niko Kovac, and a squad that—despite some absences—has the firepower to go deep in this Club World Cup. They haven’t exactly blown teams away, but they’ve managed their group well, got the job done, and now face a Monterrey side that’s more solid than spectacular.

Dortmund’s tournament so far has had its moments. A dull draw with Fluminense was followed by a chaotic 4-3 win over Sundowns and then a narrow but efficient 1-0 against Ulsan. The standout name has been Jobe Bellingham—yes, Jude’s younger brother—and he’s handled himself brilliantly, not just in flashes but with real maturity in midfield. Then there’s Serhou Guirassy. One goal so far here, but this is a striker who nearly matched Harry Kane in the Bundesliga. You know he’s due another.

There’s a rhythm to this Dortmund team that feels promising, but also a fragility that can creep in when they lose control—especially in the second halves. They’ve created plenty, but finishing has let them down a bit, and missing players like Brandt or Bynoe-Gittens certainly dents their creativity. Still, the structure’s there, and with players like Adeyemi and Sabitzer supporting from deep, they can hurt anyone.

Monterrey, to their credit, haven’t looked out of place. They’ve got veterans like Sergio Ramos holding the backline together, and German Berterame up front is the one to watch—clever movement, decent finishing, and someone who will test Dortmund’s defence.

But this is a step up. Monterrey have done well keeping things tight, just one goal conceded so far, but against a Dortmund side that can shift gears quickly in transition, it’s going to be a different kind of challenge. Kovac’s men aren’t always pretty, but they’re effective, especially when they don’t let the game slip into chaos.

Where this could be tricky for Dortmund is the conditions. Heat’s a factor, and they’ve looked leggy in second halves. Monterrey will try to exploit that by staying compact early and then growing into the game, but they’ll need more than just resilience to pull off an upset here.

Dortmund should have enough. It might not be spectacular, but Guirassy will get chances, and Bellingham looks ready to keep dictating play in midfield. Expect a tight match, possibly settled by a moment of quality or a set piece. The Germans are better equipped in both boxes—and that’s often what it comes down to in knockout football.
