In the Club World Cup Round of 16, E Group winners Inter Milan take on Fluminense, who finished second in Group F, at Bank of America Stadium on Monday. The winner of this match will face either Manchester City or Al Hilal in the quarter-finals.

Led by new Romanian head coach Cristian Chivu, Inter Milan – last season’s Serie A runners-up and Champions League final losers to PSG – managed to overcome early struggles to top Group F. They secured first place with a 2–0 win over River Plate in the final group stage match, held at Seattle’s Lumen Field in the early hours of Thursday.

Inter had the upper hand in expected goals (xG) and deserved to win. Their goals came in the second half, with 19-year-old Francesco Pio Esposito, signed from Spezia in the summer, scoring in the 72nd minute, followed by a stoppage-time goal from defender Alessandro Bastoni.

Earlier in the group stage, Inter drew 1–1 with Monterrey in Pasadena and edged out Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds 2–1, also in Seattle. Not really convincing results or performances so far. Inter does not look like a club who are winning things!

Of the five goals Inter scored in their group, captain Lautaro Martínez netted two in the first two matches. Other scorers include Bastoni, Esposito, and Valentin Carboni, signed from Marseille, who scored the winner against Urawa after an assist from Esposito.

Team news - Inter Milan:

Inter will be missing several defenders: Yannick Bisseck, Benjamin Pavard, and new signing Zinho Vanheusden (hernia). Matteo Darmian is also a doubt. Midfielders Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Piotr Zieliński remain sidelined, and striker Mehdi Taremi is unavailable due to Iran's airspace restrictions.

Goals have come from a spread of players: Argentine defender Juan Freytes, midfielder Nonato, Colombian forward Jhon Arias, and Brazilian attacker Keno, each scoring once.

Team news - Fluminense:

Fluminense will be without midfielders Isaque and Otavio and striker Riquelme Felipe for this game. However, 40-year-old Thiago Silva, who picked up a muscle injury in the opener, is available again. The oldest player in the squad remains veteran goalkeeper Fabio, 44. Fellow veterans Ganso (35) and Germán Cano (37) are expected to start from the bench.

Aside from one outing, Fluminense’s attack has looked blunt in this tournament. Still, if they can drag the match into extra time against a potentially tired Inter side, anything is possible when it comes to advancing. I do not count Inter's defensive problems that big that a goalless draw would not be the likeliest outcome, but a X2 seems like a reasonable idea under these circumstances!'
