The matches on Friday in Finland did not go too well, here are my thoughts for the best two of today, my friends:

SJK – IFK MARIEHAMN

SJK managed to steal points from Tammela in the last round by defeating favorites Ilves 3–2. In terms of numbers, the match was SJK’s best in a while. However, the same performance didn’t continue midweek in the Finnish Cup, as a 0–2 loss to AC Oulu ended their hopes of reaching the semifinals.

IFK Mariehamn is quickly becoming a nightmare for top teams, at least in home games played on the island. In the last home match against KuPS, IFK was outplayed throughout, but still managed to snatch a 1–0 win with a set-piece goal. Despite this relatively good points tally compared to the level of their play, it hasn’t yet made a real impact: the islanders remain at the bottom of the team power rankings.

The difference in team quality speaks in favor of SJK, but the fatigue from Tuesday’s cup match should be taken into account as a factor dampening their favorite status. I estimate that SJK has about a 68 percent chance of winning despite the fatigue. The expected goal tally for the match is above league average, around 3.20 goals.

HAKA – ILVES

Haka suffered a 1–3 loss away to HJK in the previous league round, and the final score didn’t really distort the difference in quality observed in the match. Haka’s hopes of a Finnish Cup semifinal place also ended on Tuesday, after a 1–2 loss in a penalty shootout at home against KuPS.

Ilves surprisingly lost 2–3 at home to SJK in the last round, and partly in a match that didn’t fully reflect the flow of play. Entering the game as a clear favorite, Ilves didn’t perform to expected standards, though overall, there isn’t too much to criticize in their level of play.

The difference in team quality speaks in Ilves’ favor, although Haka has performed better than expected this season. Haka’s aggressive and direct attacking play caused problems for Ilves’ defense in the previous meeting this season, but overall, Ilves was the better side despite the 3–2 scoreline. A small negative must be accounted for due to Haka’s midweek cup match.

I go for the favourites today again, even if it failed big time yesterday. Normally this is rather predictable league when the top teams are on the pitch!
