GNISTAN – FC INTER

Gnistan managed a goalless draw away against VPS in the last round, despite being second-best for long stretches of the match. On the whole, this season has not reached the level expected from their strengthened squad, apart from a few isolated moments. Contributing to this has been the ongoing challenge with the squad’s availability: key central players are likely still missing due to injury — Roman Eremenko and Vertti Hänninen — while Armend Kabashi is out due to suspension. Very bad news, as most of their biggest names are getting old and have difficulties in adjusting to this heavy schedule.

FC Inter didn’t hold back in their pre-Midsummer home match against KTP, with a commanding 5–0 win that reflected the difference in quality. Scoring five goals without any of them being assisted or scored by Axel Kouame shows how much FC Inter’s performance has evolved — earlier in the season, their success seemed heavily reliant on the Ivorian striker’s impressive form, who is likely to be sold to a bigger league sooner or later.

The teams' current league positions (Gnistan 7th, FC Inter at the top) reflect the actual gap in quality quite well. The home side’s absences in central areas are a notable weakness, especially when facing one of the league’s best midfields — a unit that transitions quickly and efficiently after winning possession.

KUPS – HJK

Two biggest clubs in Finland for several years in a row, now also Ilves and Inter are in the title hunt.

KuPS has now gone five consecutive league games without a win, and also without scoring a single goal. That is some impossible run, there is bad luck, but it shows how lucky they were with the results - and schedule - in the start of the season! Their latest 0–1 loss to IFK Mariehamn was undeserved based on how the game played out. Some relief came on Tuesday, as they clinched a spot in the Finnish Cup semifinals with a penalty shootout victory over Haka. KuPS has recently struggled with absences, but on Friday, they are expected to field their best possible lineup.

Under Miika Nuutinen, HJK has found a new rhythm. Their pressing and increased attacking threat have made them nearly unstoppable against weaker sides. However, it’s worth noting how favorable their fixture list has been: among the top teams, they’ve only faced KuPS — and without success. There is some uncertainty regarding HJK’s right-wing position, as both Miska Ylitolva and Brooklyn Lyons-Foster are questionable due to injuries. HJK rested almost everyone in their cup match during the week, against their reserves, and they are better rested for this one.

KuPS’s goalless and winless streak paints a bleak picture, but their worst performances have come against strong opponents while fielding weakened lineups. In their last meeting against HJK, KuPS dominated the game and should have won based on chances, although it ended 0–0. I consider HJK the better team overall, but as the away side.

I would like to get a reason to back Inter, but their performances recently and the injuries make it a no-no, so let us try a tasty away wins with a bigger handicap this time.
