KuPS VS HJK Helsinki

KuPS challenge HJK in  this Veikkausliiga battle at Väre Areena in Kuopio  very early Saturday morning Beijing time. KuPS and SJK have played 13 games, the rest of the teams have played 11 or 12 matches. This is the first tier of Finland but the level of this league is, as many of my fans are probably aware of by now, somewhat poor by European standards. However, football fans and us serious football bettors can expect a match of high level by this league's standards here! Most importantly, we have another very lucrative betting opportunity here! We have won five of the last six picks betting on Veikkausliiga. HJK are the richest and most successful club in Finland but their last season was a mess, dare I say "circus". I have mentioned about that many times before so I will not go into it in detail in this preview but HJK finished in third place. This was a huge disappointment by their (very high) standards.. Indeed, HJK have won 11 championships in the last 15 years - qualifying once for the UEFA Europa League and three times for the UEFA Conference League in the last four seasons! HJK are the only Finnish club to make it to the group/league stage of a UEFA club competition.. They sacked Toni "Toke" Korkeakunnas after only five Veikkausliiga games in May - having won only one of the first five matches. They have improved under the caretaker head coach, Miika Nuutinen. He is a promising but undeniably an inexperienced coach.. According to a reliable Finnish sports media, MTV Urheilu, Nuutinen will be the head coach for the rest of season. Aleksi Lalli, the reserve/youth team coach, was appointed as Nuutinen's assistant coach. He is even younger - and also a very promising coach. No, HJK have not fully convinced me even under Nuutinen but are still unbeaten in their last 12 games.    Even so, the difference compared to the Korkeakunnas era is massive!

HJK have looked confident and relaxed in six of the seven Veikkausliiga games, winning six of these seven matches by a margin of more than one goal! In the last month HJK have beaten a small/ limited team from the 2nd tier - JäPS 2-1 at home - and MP from 3rd tier 1-0 away from home and these performance's (in the Suomen Cup, Finnish Cup) were not great.. However, HJK Nuutinen did pretty heavy squad rotation in these games.. A few weeks ago HJK defeated a good team, SJK, 4-2 at home but I need to mention that SJK were missing several key players/ a few important players were not in the starting eleven. HJK were big favourites to win the game on the betting market. Against KuPS at home, on the 31st of May, it was a slightly disappointing performance.. No goals were scored at Bolt Arena but KuPS, the underdogs in this game,  surprisingly came closer to taking all three points.. However, since this game HJK have improved a lot whereas KuPS have declined significantly. Unlike the bookies, as a professional bettor I will never react to an individual match too much. I emphasize that this was one of the few games recently where KuPS have performed well.. In their last game HJK beat their reserve/youth team, Klubi 04, at Bolt Arena, 4-0. HJK were able to rest most of their key players - expected to be in the starting lineup today against KuPS.. This is important as it will be a tough match.. Even so, the odds on the KuPS win have gone down significantly today - they are with most of the biggest bookies now slim favourites to win. I disagree and will recommend a +0.5 goals handicap bet on HJK.  In their last Veikkausliiga match HJK comfortably beat a decent team, Haka, 3-1 at home, generating much more in xG. Haka, too, had their chances but HJK were simply too good - despite not even being quite at their best. Before beating Haka HJK crushed AC Oulu 4-0 on the road. They deserved to win but the final score does, in all honesty, flatter them.. Indeed, Oulu had a few good scoring chances early in the second half when the score was still 0-1. HJK are currently in 4th place with 23 points in their pocket. They have scored an impressive 28 goals - which is the biggest number in this league! HJK's  number of expected goals (xG) is a bit smaller though.. They have conceded 11 goals. By pure class they are the best team in this league but albeit not by a very clear margin.. KuPS are only the 4th-best team in this league at the moment - and are not much better than SJK, in 5th place in my power rating.. Yes, KuPS can improve but would probably need a few new players, especially offensive ones. HJK will be without key defender Ville Tikkanen but KuPS, too, are missing for example Nico Hämäläinen and Ricardo.. It seems that the bookies have overreacted to Tikkanen being out. One of HJK best players, Miska Ylitolva,22, is back from the U21 European Championships. This is very important for HJK!

Yes, KuPS are the reigning champions of Veikkausliiga - they also won the Suomen Cup last season. However, I would be surprised if they were to lift the Veikkausliiga trophy this season.. KuPS'  excellent head coach, Jani "Honsu" Honkavaara left the club after last season and is now coaching a pretty big team Djurgården in Sweden. Jarkko Wiss is KuPS' current coach. He is, in my expert opinion, a rather mediocre coach - definitely much worse than Honkavaara.. I believe the bookmakers do not give this factor enough emphasis.. I'm 95% sure that without Honkavaara, KuPS would not have won the league in 2024! A bit surprisingly Wiss did not do much squad rotation a few days ago against Haka in the Suomen Cup. KuPS eliminated Haka 2-1 after penalties.In the Veikkausliiga KuPS are in third place with - 23 points to their account. KuPS have scored only 16 goals and have allowed 12 goals in this league so far. Their number of expected goals (xG) is a bit bigger though but their number of expected goals allowed (xGA) is higher as well - 1.44 per game to be precise! KuPS kicked the season well results-wise - 6 wins and one draw in the first seven games -  but also had quite a lot of luck on their side in many of these seven matches, especially in the Veikkausliiga opening round against Inter Turku and in round 3 against Jaro at home! However, KuPS have now failed to win any of their last five Veikkausliiga games! Moreover, they have failed to score a single goal in these five games! What an incredibly bad record. Especially  strikerAgon Sadiku, who was really effective in the Veikkausliiga in 2022, has been a huge disappointment. KuPS simply do not have a striker that would regularly score goals.. Moreover, KuPS have lost four of their last five Veikkausliiga games and I believe this has had a pretty big negative effect on their level of confidence.. They are, as I already mentioned, undoubtedly in decline, more steep than the bookmakers seem to understand.. Yes, KuPS easily beat two very bad lower league (mainly) amateur teams in the Suomen Cup but I will not give these victories a lot of emphasis ahead of this match against the best team in Finland. Before beating Haka KuPS lost to a somewhat limited team, IFK Mariehamn 0-1 away from home, as very clear favourites according to the bookies. Yes, they recorded many more total shots than the hosts - but had just one more big scoring chance - 3-2 to be precise.. Most of their attacks lacked speed, creativity and passing accuracy at critical moments/in key areas (near the opponent's goal) but IFK also defended a little better than expected.. Before this KuPS lost to Ilves 0-3 at home - after an embarrassing performance! They failed to record a single big scoring chance! Ilves,on the other hand, managed five. The visitors generated 2.78 in xG  - KuPS' number was only 0.52!
