HJK vs Gnistan

HJK and Gnistan lock horns in this Finnish Veikkausliiga clash at Bolt Arena in Helsinki, my home town, very early morning Wednesday Beijing time. Gnistan, too, come from Helsinki so this is a Helsinki derby. This lowers the home advantage quite a lot. There will be a good number of Gnistan fans at the Arena here. This is the highest tier of Finnish football but the level is low by European standards. We have won eight of the last 10 picks betting on Veikkausliiga and have another fine betting opportunity here! Football enthusiasts and us serious, profit-hungry bettors can expect a match of better than average quality here-. By taking a look at the league table, after two rounds of play this is surely hard to believe.. HJK are the biggest and most successful teams in Finnish football. However, last season they finished only in 3rd place, behind KuPS, the reigning champions, and Ilves. This was a surprise and a big disappointment for the players and fans alike.. This season HJK look better on paper – for example ex-Norwich striker Teemu Pukki and experienced midfielder Alex Ring joined the club – both from the MLS. They are very good players by Veikkausliiga standards. Even so, Toni "Toke" Korkeakunnas is - for reasons I do not fully understand, still the head coach.. He is not a great coach even by Veikkausliiga standards – especially (not) in terms of tactical skill.. This is the biggest problem HJK have at the moment. Toke and his coaching team do not seem to be able to organize the midfield/defence well enough.. The HJK offense, on the other hand, has individual skill in Pukki and L. Möller but lacks structure and creativity..  Yes, they are still the biggest favourites to win the league but another season without the trophy would not really be a surprise.. Ilves, KuPS, Inter and SJK have a realistic chance to win the championship..

HJK started the season in Tampere, losing to Ilves 2-3 – despite leading 2-0 early in the first half. They were - somewhat surprisingly -  dominant for some 30 minutes but after that Ilves were the much better team on the pitch.. We can say that in the end Ilves deserved to win but a draw would not have been unjustified either. The way HJK faded away - dare I say "collapsed" after the good start should be a big worry for Toke and the fans.. In the second game of the season HJK lost to SJK 0-1 in Seinäjoki. HJK's S. Hostikka was sent off a few minutes before halftime. He was booked twice in a row. He, very surprisingly, lost his nerves in a physical duel that also included some "strong words". Gasc, an "annoying" SJK player drew/caused the yellow cards.  Hostikka being sent off of course affected the game a lot but HJK did not impress me even before the red card. SJK were very dangerous on counter attacks and could have scored. HJK, too, created a few scoring caches, but not very dangerous ones.. After the first about eight minutes HJK, once again, looked surprisingly imbalanced on the pitch.  HJK were priced around 2.20 to win by the bookies. I believe that SJK could have won even without Hostikka's red card.. There is huge pressure on HJK from the football media and very demanding fans.. I believe that a physical, perhaps pretty nervy game is on the cards here. Yes, HJK are of course the favourites here but the current odds of around 1.45 on the home win are much too low! They have now lost four games in a row – and five consecutive matches in Veikkausliiga – three of these five were played last season. They allowed a whopping 11 goals in their last four matches! We will place a bet on the Gnistan ´+1.5 goals handicap option with a great chance of winning!  Before the season started I had Gnistan in 7th place in the power rating.. They are, on paper, much stronger than at the start last season. Russian midfielder, Y. Bashkirov, joined the club from VPS. He is a very creative player – one of the best midfielders in this league! Last season they even came pretty close to earning a ticket for the UEFA Conference League Qualification. Yes, Gnistan were disappointing in the first two Veikkausliiga games. In the opening round they lost to Haka 2-3 away from home. In their last Veikkausliiga game to Inter 0-3 in Turku. No, Gnistan were not great but Inter were even better than expected! The expected goals (xG) numbers were 1.85-0.32 in Inter's favour. In their last game Gnistan defeated Gnistan M35 5-0 in the Finnish Cup. Gnistan can improve in all areas of the game and would surely love to upset the disappointing HJK here.. They, too, of course desperately need points but HJK I expect HJK to feel more pressure here..  The bookies seem to have overreacted to Gnistan's lame start to the season.. Last season HJK beat Gnistan 1-0 at home.
