Bochum have conceded 37 goals, only Holstein have conceded more goals. Bochum's number of expected goals allowed (xGA) is even a bit bigger than 37! It is simply impossible to mention anything positive about their performances this season.. In terms of players' estimated total market value (49.75 million euros), they are also a very small team by this league's standards.. St. Pauli were promoted to this league for this season and are, in all honesty, not a great team.. However, they have still been much better than Bochum – taking 14 points. Their number of xPTS is 20.45. St. Pauli are in 14th place in the standings. They have scored only 12 goals but their number of expected goals (xG) is 29.03. Defensively they are much better than Bochum. Indeed, St. Pauli have allowed only 20 goals, less than the reigning champions, Bayer Leverkusen! No, they do not have the "biggest names" in defence but have an excellent defensive structure! Moreover, silly individual mistakes have been very rare.. On the road they have taken a decent three wins in eight Bundesliga games and should have a good chance of beating Bochum here! The bookies see Bochum as the favourites, offering odds of around 2.90 on the away win. This is, based on my expert analysis, clearly too high. We will, however, take the St. Pauli +0.5 goals handicap with a great chance of winning!

Yes, Bochum beat two lowly opponents, Heracles, Dutch team, 1-0 - and Wuppertal 6-2 - in friendly games during the Bundesliga winter break. However, I will not give these wins a lot of emphasis.. Bochum have, rather amazingly, won only one competitive game this season – in all competitions! In their last game, Bochum lost to Mainz 0-2 away from home, recording only two shots on goal. Mainz also had many more big scoring chances (3-1) and also generated much more in xG - 1.87-0.49 to be precise. In round 15 Bochum played much better than usual, beating Heidenheim 2-0 at home as pretty clear favourites on the betting market. Heidenheim, on the other hand, were strangely lame offensively in this game. The hosts deserved the three points after recording more goal attempts – 14-10. However, the final score flatters them. Indeed, they generated 0.73 more in xG than Heidenheim. In round 14 Bochum were lucky to get a point (1-1) against Union Berlin on the road. They hosts recorded a high 22 goal attempts and also generated much more in xG! Bochum's K. Miyoshi was sent off in the first half though.. St. Pauli have been in mediocre form recently, winning two of their last five competitive games. In their most recent match St. Pauli were very unlucky to lose to St. Pauli at home. They were pretty clear underdogs on the betting market but recorded more goal attempts (18-14), shots off goal (9-6), big scoring chances and shots inside the opponent's penalty box. They also generated more in xG – 2.21-1.74. Frankfurt had two more shots on target though. In round 15 St. Pauli were priced close to 7.00 to defeat Stuttgart on the road but grabbed a morale-boosting 1-0 win!  Both teams had five shots on target but the hosts had over 70% ball possession. The visitors even generated more in xG – 2.56-2.31 . Furthermore, St. Pauli's J. Eggstein missed a penalty in the 53rd minute. I was impressed with the way St Pauli defended as a team - once again! Let's remember that Stuttgart finished in 2nd place last season and consequently play in the iconic UEFA Champions League league phase this season!
