Another day and again the choices in my shortlist are limited and tricky. It’s just one of those weekends, it seems, when the games are too well balanced or don’t give a clear picture about what you’d expect to happen.

Empoli-Bologna clash in Italy feels to have some value about it for a few reasons. Visitors should have a good fan presence in the stadium here as the two cities are apart by just 125 kilometers (1.5h ride by car). This should ensure Bologna is given a good confidence boost and elevates their attitude to a greater level than in any ordinary away fixture. Moreso, Empoli’s stadium is rarely full, so the away fans will be heard well.

Bologna under Mihajlovic has been largely inconsistent so far, delivering mixed performances and results. 1-6 against Inter was the highlight so far, though, anyone who watched the game would admit the final scoreline did not do Bologna’s efforts justice.

Mihajlovic men went on to slightly capitalize for the embarrassment of their Milan trip with a super entertaining 2-2 draw against Genoa, a game they did deserve to win, counting the overall chances.

Overviewing Bologna’s squad, I’d say it holds a great deal of talent and passion coming from young talents like Scottish 19 year old fullback Hickey, 21 year old Emanuel Vignato (a really exciting prospect on the wing), central midfielders Svanberg (22) and Nicolas Dominguez (23). On the other hand, there are also such established players like fullback De Silvestri, Austrian striker Arnautovic or the never fading Gary Medel. All of this provides a great blend of adolescence and experience for Bologna. With the right attitude, they could make a good bid for a top 7 finish this season.

If to draw comparison with Empoli, who have just arrived in Serie A, then the hosting team has a lackluster and poorly balanced roster. They limp hard at the defensive end with fairly unknown players like 19 year old centre-back Viti or Slovenian Petar Stojanovic on the right fullback position. Midfield trio is not looking any better with 20 year old local homegrown talent Ricci leading the path.

The final third with Pinamonti, Cutrone and Mancuso is by far the most interesting, yet, not getting the right service and remains somewhat detached from the rest of the team.

As it stands now, Empoli is the worst home team in the competition having lost all 3 of their games at the Carlo Castellani stadium to date. They even found a way to lose to fellow promoted Venezia (1-2) in what became Venezia’s first and only win in 5 rounds.

It is not going to be easy for Bologna, however, I do believe there is enough quality to their squad (free of any injury/suspension concerns, by the way) to make it count in this tie on Sunday. The double chance and 0 handicap in Asian books look safe and appealing to me.
