Without being too biased, in my opinion, the appointment of Patrick Vieira is hands down one of the worst decisions in European leagues this summer. I can not think of a reason to justify this move from Crystal Palace owners. Former Arsenal legendary central midfielder, had done largely nothing with a very talented Nice squad in Ligue1. He had enough trust and time in charge of the team, but over 89 matches had not shown any consistency or ideas. Nice were always a moody, mish-mash thing under the Frenchman.

The bravery to allow him to work in Europe’s most competitive league is unexplainable.

Obviously the opening round result against Chelsea can not be taken into serious consideration as the quality difference there was astronomic. However, in the short perspective, I do not expect anything good to come Palace way. Not with this manager.

Brentford are currently in “honeymoon” mode, having finally made it into the Premier League, after years of suffering setbacks in promotion playoffs.

As Vieira is attempting to implement his ideas into the new team and the squad, in turn, is trying to adapt to life after Roy Hodgson, ultra motivated Brentford is not the sort of opponent you’d want to face. The double chance on visitors to cause another upset early in the season feels as the right call.
