In the group stage Italy beat a  very lowly team by the EURO 2024 standards, Albania 2-1, lost to Spain only 0-1 but were truly outplayed by the Spaniards who generated much more in xG. Italy were able to do very little offensively.  Italy also played a 1-1 draw against Croatia, a declining team, as favourites on the betting market..

Italy are in sort of a rebuilding phase and might do much better in 2-5 years time.. However, they did France 3-1 away from home in the opening round of the Nationals League about a month ago. Despite definitely hurting Belgium's chances, the bookies seem to have overreacted to these absences!  The experienced Romelu Lukaku will not appear at Stadio Olimpico as he has taken a national team sabbatical until 2025 in order to get 100% fit for his new club, Napoli (Serie A). The injured national team captain Kevin De Bruyne, one of the best midfielders in the world, and Manchester City's star as well as the "estranged" goalkeeper T. Courtois are also out. Tedesco has called up Atalanta's very skilled C. De Ketelaere and Juventus winger S. Mbangula. The very talented Mbangula only made his debut in August, scoring in his first Italian Serie A appearance! As Lukaku is out, the very promising L. Openda is expected to start up front. The very talented but often somewhat under-rated Leandro Trossard (Arsenal) is back in the Belgium squad after being overlooked for rounds 1 and 2..

Belgium are in the 6th place in the FIFA Ranking but this is, in all honesty, too high – but not very significant, after all.. In their last game Belgium lost to France 0-2 away from home as clear underdogs. France, rather unsurprisingly, improved a lot from their previous game against Italy and deserved to win. Belgium, on the other hand, were not even close to their best! Even so, Belgium still recorded a decent nine goal attempts and 1.03 in xG. Before this Belgium crushed Israel 3-1 at Nagyerdei Stadion in Debrecen, a neutral location. Openda even missed a penalty.. Belgium recorded a whopping 3.43 in xG. As Belgium defended very well, Israel managed only 0.33 in xG..
