Düsseldorf is a strong team that should be fighting for promotion. Last season, they finished 3rd and lost in the playoffs, while this season, they started with 4 victories and 1 draw. They have a long unbeaten run, but I’m not convinced by their current level of play.

In fact, they have clearly lost quality compared to last season. So far this season, they have been the most overperforming team in the 2. Bundesliga, losing key players like striker Tzolis, who was the league's top scorer with 22 goals (he signed for Club Brugge), and midfielder Engelhardt (who went to Como).

They have been very efficient, while their opponents have not. In my opinion, they have earned better results than they deserved. The only truly good game was the 1-0 win against Hannover, but Hannover were very weak that day as well.

On the other hand, Cologne is the best team in the league and main favorite to win the title. Newly relegated this season, they have an amazing squad, with a value almost double that of the main teams in the league (like Düsseldorf), as they retained many players from Bundesliga 1 with the clear target of achieving promotion this year.

They have many of the best players in the league: midfielder Martel, defenders like Hübers and Thielmann… They face the same issue as last season: the lack of a reliable striker who can guarantee 15-20 goals, but they have plenty of dangerous players from the second line who can score goals.

They are clearly the outstanding team in this league, much better than everyone else. However, they have been underperforming so far, with only 2 victories in 5 games and suffering defeats against Magdeburg and Hamburg. But both of those defeats were totally undeserved: against Magdeburg (1-2), they generated 4.64 expected goals and conceded just 1.17, while against Hamburg (1-2), they generated 3.29 and conceded 1.95.

The value likely emerges here because we have the biggest underperformers (Cologne) meeting the biggest overperformers (Düsseldorf). I have no doubts that Cologne will be the favorite in this derby fixture.
