Egypt has been impressive so far.

They have been a team I had expectations put on from the beginning, as have plenty of pedigree and are a good side. Physically they are strong and have plenty of experience as well. As they proved that they are a very difficult team to bea. Are yet to lose a game, and are coming from a brilliant performance against Spain, beating 1:2 one of the main title contenders of the tournament.

They are blessed with terrific physical attributes and very good players. Arsenal’s midfielder Mohamed Elneny, who was named as an overage player for Egypt, has been a great addition for the midfield, although the best player so far has been winger Adel with 2 goals, as well as LB Eid who has been great in the wing. ç

Their weak point I believe is the quality of the chances they create. They need to make better chances, as against Dominican Republic (0:0) they attacked a lot but weren’t able to generate clear situations. Against Uzbekistan (0:1) was more or less the same, although they managed to keep the game controlled. And against Spain they definitely improved in this area, generating 1.85 expected goals and scoring 2 goals (1:2), showing a lot of quality upfront with Adel and Zizo.

On the other hand, Paraguay is a team where I also had expectations but as opposed to Egypt, they have made poor performances, especially in defense. They made great South American qualifiers, beating Brazil and drawing twice against Argentina. However, their main strength there was their solid defense, intensity and an ultra-defensive approach. But here in the Olympics they have been the opposite. And when they were really successful, they were being defensive.

They have conceded plenty of goals and chances in the three games so far. 5 against Japan, 2 against Israel (one of the worst teams in the tournament) and in the last round against Mali they deserved to concede and the victory was very lucky, as they conceded 0.98 expected goals and many chances.

For this fixture I expect Paraguay to play much more defensive, as did against Mali (helped also by the goal at 5’). However, I believe that here they’ll struggle with Egypt’s physical strength, and surely Egypt will be able to generate enough chances to score some goal. Egypt is a very solid team and difficult to beat, and I don’t see Paraguay able to do it.

Egypt is coming with a lot of confidence after beating title contenders Spain, whilst Paraguay left me many doubts in their defense this tournament. To beat a team like Egypt you need to be very strong physically and with a lot of quality, something that Paraguay is missing.
