Last time when Ilves played in Europe? It was back in 1991. AS Roma where the visiting team with Rudi Voller and Thomas Hassler in the ranks. The Ilves goal was scored Marek Czakon who died earlier this year, and the Ilves coach Rantanen was 4 years old!

Ilves are only starting from the 2nd qualification round, at it has been years since they played in Europe. This season they have been perhaps the best team in local league, but they are horribly inconsistent and inexperienced and unreliable defensively, but in the attack they have been entertaining to watch under the coach Rantanen who has a strong background in HJK youth teams.

Ilves miss several players today and some others are at least not fully fit, but for sure want to take in part in this European journey.

Unfortunately those players are also the important ones. Aspegren and Hasa are out for sure, Ulundu and Jorginho might play some part. They had to recall players on loan for the remaining of the season, like Kante from EIF.

The visiting Austria Wien side have only played friendlies recently as they are off-season, and those matches tell very little of their form, but the class is several steps ahead as we have seen when the Austrian sides usually visit HJK. To make it clearer, no Ilves player will make it to the Austrian top sides like them, the individual class, team class and resources are completely on a different level.

The only reason why this might be relatively tight for some time is the lack of match fitness from the away team, and the fact that they will win win at home by 3 goals if needed, but I can not overlook the class difference and inexperience of the home side.

Yes, there is artificial pitch at the new Tammela stadion, but it is no advantage anymore in Europe as it is a good one.
