I expect Belgium to be too strong for one of the worst teams in the tournament like Slovakia.

Although Belgium doesn’t have the best squad in recent history, they still have some top players who are class above and could lead the team to the latter stages of the tournament, especially Romelu Lukaku and Kevin de Bruyne. If Belgium are going to muscle their way into the inner circle of Euro 2024 contenders, they’ll need a fit and firing De Bruyne and his knack for scoring in key moments. His battle with Stanislav Lobotka could decide the midfield battleground in this fixture.

They are coming from a terrible performance in the 2022 World Cup, but have an aging core and made good games since that tournament: 10 wins and 4 draws for Domenico Tedesco’s team.

Belgium will need to be very patient as Slovakia will use a very defensive approach. This is where Lukaku will be the key, as he has good ability to score goals and although his last World Cup which was terrible, he always makes good performances in international tournaments: 4 goals in 2018 World Cup and EURO 2020. He has been the topscorer in the qualifiers with 14 goals in 10 games, 4 more than 2nd topscorer Cristiano Ronaldo.

De Bruyne and Onana will bring experience and control to the midfield, whilst the defense is where I see Belgium’s weak point, especially without Witsel (injured for this fixture) and Courtois (out of the squad for this tournament), but I don’t see Slovakia attacking too much and generating danger here.

Slovakia won’t be an easy rival but are among the worst teams in this Eurocup. They sit #48 in the FIFA Ranking and have been outplayed by all strong teams recently.

In 4 of their 5 tournaments played in their history they failed to score, so they are lacking experience as well. They’ll approach a very defensive attitude, trying to keep the match quiet, the goal to nil, and wait patiently for their chance.

It’s the plan they did during the qualifiers where successfully managed to quality as 2nd behind Portugal, conceding just 8 goals in 10 games and 4 of them were scored by Portugal in the two games played. However, they had a very favorable group with weak teams.

Their key players will be Newcastle goalkeeper Dubravka, captain and CB Skriniar, midfielder Lobotka and their main threat upfront will be Bozenik, who could be an isolated figure for Slovakia, with the Red Devils set to have the lion’s share of the possession.

Belgium has much more quality and experience at this level, and I expect them to dominate this fixture. Are coming in good form and Slovakia has been outplayed by all strong teams recently (Austria, Portugal twice), so I expect them to struggle here.
