Marseille host Benfica for this UEFA Europa League quarter-finals end leg battle at Stade Vélodrome early Friday morning Beijing time. They were pretty clear favourites in the betting market – priced around 1.70 to win at the time of kickoff as smart money piled up in them a few hours before the match started. Today they do not have to win but have an excellent chance of avoiding defeat. Marseille are priced around 2.30 to win by the bookies but this is way too low.

Yes, French teams usually struggle on the road in international games.. At home they can sometimes beat even the top-teams, like Lens beat Arsenal 2-1 last autumn in the Champions League. Taking this factor and the "must win situation for Marseille into account" I see this game as a coin toss – without a favourite. We will take Benfica +0.5 goals handicap option. Benfica are currently in 2nd place in the Liga Portugal with an impressive 70 points and still have a great score difference of 66:23. In their last game they crushed Moreirense 3-0 at home. The visitors are a pretty dangerous team and I liked Benfica's performance a lot. They allowed the visitors only 0.28 in xG. Marseille are having an erratic and as a whole disappointing season.. They are in 9th place in the Ligue 1 with only 39 points in their pocket. Their number of xPTS is bigger though. They had a lame run in January and in the first half of February. After that they managed to take many wins in a row under the new manager, J. Gasset. He replaced Gennaro Gattuso. Now Marseille are no longer enjoying Gasset's new manager bounce and are totally out of form! Indeed, they have now lost five games in a row, 4/5 by a margin of two goals! Before losing to Benfica they faced Lille on the road and the hosts deservedly took all three points – 3-1 was the final score. They had more goal attempts, shots on target, corner kicks, total passes, completed passes and attacks. The xG numbers were 1.55-0.77. Before this they did not have much of a chance against PSG.
