The BIG match of the week, and a look at the table tells all about the stakes. It has to be remembered that as Real Madrid would have the advantage over both of these on tied points the draw is not a good result to Atletico here either, although it is likely that Real will lose points in their upcoming games as they have difficult schedule.
Atletico have lead the table most of the season, and in February they were about 80 % likely winners to the title with their 10 point gap, but it is all gone now. Most worryingly the point count of Atletico has caught up with their expected performances, they are good, but not superb and a lot has been depending on Llorente who is carrying the whole team on his back.
Suarez has been out due muscle injury, and he has returned, but looking like non-fit. Last round Atletico were great v Elche until Llorente's goal at 22 minute. Ever since then coach Simeone got again one of his scared phases, put the breaks on and Atletico suffered badly in the hands of league's clearly weakest team, and were lucky to win in the end.
None of their previous matches was that great either, and the schedule has been easy as they have met all relegation candidates.
Barcelona I have talked about almost every round as they have been better than most people think, attractive and efficient. There was this unlucky loss to Granada in a game where Barcelona took the lead - and also led the table for 40 minutes, but then football showed its best and Granada scored twice to win the game in the end. Last time away at Valencia it was another attackingly briliant performance, and a Messi show after going behind early, and Barcelona keep on playing the best football in mainland Europe.
Quite surprisingly this is a fixture where Atletico get anything out rarely. Perhaps it is Simeone who is afraid to play, and they tend to look any other deeply defensing team that Barcelona are used to open up? It is also a fixture with a lot of silly goals, own goals, red cards and unexpected things in general, and I am glad of the kick-off time as we all have a chance to watch it without losing the sleep!
The odds? Straight win odds look short vs a european top team with highly praised defense, but Barcelona have recently only improved their performances when already in lead, so perhaps there is at least a late goal by Dembele to cover this handicap!
