SJK VS KuPS

SJK host KuPS from Kuopio at OmaSp Stadion in Seinäjoki late Friday evening Beijing time. This is the first tier of my home country's football but the level is pretty low by European standards. It has, however, improved during the last 10 or so years! As a Finnish professional football bettor I know Veikkausliiga and all the teams and players very well - the bookmakers, on the other hand, pretty often seem to make some mistakes with their odds in Veikkausliiga and in Ykkönen, the second-tier. I watch every single Veikkausliiga game– many games live at the stadium - like today in Espoo (Honka vs KTP) SJK have grabbed 17 points and currently occupy the 3th place in the standings in this league with a total of 12 clubs.. They are, however, in 4th place in my power rating that reflects the teams' pure class. However, the difference between them and Honka is very small. SJK have netted the ball 10 times in Veikkausliiga so far this season. However, in terms of expected goals they would have deserved 10.90 goals. They have had a very solid defense and have allowed just two goals. Their defense has a good structure and the defenders make very few silly mistakes. They also defend well as a team when needed. Even the strikers sometimes defend with a great attitude. However, the number of expected goals allowed (xGA) is ,of course, much bigger and we should not get carried away but the minimal number of goals conceded! 

SJK have exceeded the expectations so far but we must not forget that they have played just one match against a top-3 team. This match took place on the 15th of April away from home against Honka and no goals were scored. Honka were the better team in this game and would have deserved a win! They had 54% ball possession and recorded more goal attempts, shots on and off goal, attacks and dangerous attacks. KuPS are at the moment better than Honka and are in second place in my power rating.. SJK have not lost a single game in Veikkausliiga so far but did suffer a heavy defeat on the 17th of this month at home against AC Oulu who are a mediocre team. SJK were clear favorites in this game but Oulu won 4-1. Indeed, SJK are not as good as the standings reflect! They currently occupy the 3rd place with 17 points in the pocket but have been lucky in terms of expected points (xPTS).

 KuPS have a total of 19 to their account and top the standings and are only marginally behind HJK, the reigning champions, in my power rating. They have an abysmal start to the season losing two of the first three games. Then they sacked Tuutti, an inexperienced manager. He was replaced by Jani Honkavaara who won the Veikkausliiga back in 2019 with KuPS. He is an excellent manager, almost as good as HJK's Toni Koskela. KuPS immediately massively raised their level under Honkavaara and have won six games in a row! I was surprised by this and probably slightly underestimated them in a few games.. Yes, they did need a hint of luck to win all six games but have played really well! Most bookies see this match as more or less as a coin toss without an actual favorite but based on my sophisticated analysis the visitors deserve to be the favorites here! They have beaten both HJK and Honka recently and easily defeated Lahti at home in their most recent game. SJK pretty easily beat KTP away from home on Monday but would need to improve  - or get lucky here to win..
