Union will attempt to reach the last four of a European cup for the first time since way back in 1960. On the other hand, Leverkusen has been waiting for it since 2001/02 when it reached the Champions League final where it was defeated by Real Madrid. Leverkusen had a desperate start to the season. First, they was relegated at the start of the German Cup against the 3rd division club Elversberg, and their start in the Bundesliga was no better, where they were in the relegation zone until the 12th round. Nothing was better in the Champions League, where they won only 3 points in the first 4 rounds. All that started to change as soon as Xabi Alonso came to the bench. Bask replaced the Swiss Seoane after the 0-4 disaster against Bayern and in the very next game brought a 4-0 victory against Schalke. It was an announcement of better days that followed, although not immediately because it took time to arrange the dice, but ''pharmacists'', with a short crisis of results at the end of January and the beginning of February, significantly improved their position in the Bundesliga, where they reached the 6th position. A series of nine games without defeat followed, and last weekend in the derby against Eintracht, the 7th victory in a row was achieved. With that triumph, the "Pharmacists" overtook the "Eagles" in the Bundesliga standings and for the first time since the beginning of the season reached a position that leads to the Euro-cups. Now even the Champions League is not an impossible mission, since the 4th placed Leipzig escapes by an attainable 5 points. Saint-Giloise has returned to the top of Belgian football after many years. They settled for qualifying for the Champions League, from where they were moved to the Europa League by a two-legged defeat against Rangers. There, in a group with Union Berlin, Braga and Malmo, they won first place, and in the round of 16, the draw brought them together again with the Berliners, who were better than them in that double-header as well. We shouldn't expect an easy task for Leverkusen, but they have a much better team compared to the visitors, and the German and Belgian leagues are certainly not comparable. I expect that individual quality will come to the fore in this match.
