Milan started the season well, and had an ok distance up to Napoli while feeling like perhaps the strongest of the remaining teams. But after Christmas, something happened. Certainly, the team and the players have endured a sustained period of overachievement over the past two years, and in the end, keeping all players at the peak of their abilities week in and week out is no longer possible. But that it would be this bad? The start of the new year was certainly good. Win away to Salernitana, and then they looked to do the same at home to Roma. But in the last minutes of the match they lost 2-0 to 2-2, and after that it is as if the team lost its flow and its faith. 0-1 against Torino in Coppa Italia, 2-2 against Lecce in Serie A, 0-3 against Inter in Supercoppa, 0-4 and 2-5 against Lazio and Sassuolo respectively in Serie A. Disaster upon disaster. Not the best form to enter a new Milan derby with, or to the Champions League round of 16 that awaits in just over a week. Inter have also not shown any brilliant form in 2023, where we find miscalculations in the form of a draw against Monza and a loss against Empoli. But they are moving forward, and after all, they have gone 6-1-1 over all tournaments during January. Additionally, Lautaro Martínez has started scoring again, with the Argentine netting six times in the month of January. Here I think Inter will win. The team looks stronger at the moment, and it's been a few years since we saw Milan in such bad form as they are now.
