I’m expecting a tight game here.

Sassuolo improved a lot in the last weeks, being a very hard team to beat. Only Inter Milan managed to do it this season so far - they lost only one game in 12 played.

They are 6th on table, with players in great form like Berardi or goalkeeper Consigli. It would be fair to say that Sassuolo’s impressive position in the league standings cannot be ignored, with De Zerbi deserving a massive amount of credit. However, when we look at some of the key performance indicators, it becomes quite obvious that in most matches Sassuolo have been overperforming thus far this season.

On the other side, Milan is the main reason for this pick. Seems that the momentum has definitely been lost in the impressive De Pioli’s side this season. Their season so far is fantastic, but in the last games the team looks tired.

Furthermore, some key players are out and the squad is suffering a lot without them, especially the king Ibrahimovic (10 goals), probably the best player in Serie A right now beside Cristiano Ronaldo. More key players are out for this fixture: defender Kjaer and striker Rebic.

In the last games Milan lost the solidity at the back, which was their strong point. In fact, 12 of the 13 goals conceded in Serie A so far were conceded in the last 8 games. We must look especially at the last two, against very average sides like Parma and Genoa (15th and 18th) where they drew 2:2, scoring the drawing goal in the last minutes (91’ vs Genoa and 84’ vs Parma).

I think that we may see the same Milan as in the last week: tired, with mistakes at the back and difficulties to find the goals. Right now this team is at 50% of their best level, in spite of their potential and quality. Sassuolo showed that they are a very competitive team and hard to beat. Rivals must be at 100% if they want the three points against them (as Inter did in August), and right now Milan isn’t at such level.

Draw is very possible here, with both teams continuing their respective unbeaten streaks. Milan has of course the quality to win, but the last two games were worrying and I’m expecting something similar here just before the important game in 3 days against Lazio, maybe with Ibrahimovic already back with the team.
